Although many families are choosing to buy family sized sedans or crossovers because of rising gas prices, there are still some families that choose to buy mid-sizes SUVs because of their towing capability and their extra cabin space. The late 80´s was the time to buy your compact SUV. Three very popular options at the time were, the Ford Bronco II, the Chevrolet Blazer and the Toyota 4Runner. If you´re looking for a good used car that can seat around 6 people, these three compact SUVs are three good options.

The Ford Bronco II Shop Manual made it´s debut in 1984 and only sold until 1990. Ford made the Bronco II to keep up with the competition. If you’re looking for a small SUV there are many choices on the market today. Whilst looking for a new 4X4 vehicle, it occurred to me that the market had become saturated with similar vehicles all vying for the same spots on everybody’s driveways. Ever since the 4X4 explosion in popularity during the nineties (where they ceased to represent a rugged, pastoral existence and became an indicator of wealth and privilege) the vast proportion of car manufacturers have offered their own interpretation of what they consider to be the ultimate 4X4.

Up until I was handed the keys to one, I had never seriously considered owning a 4X4, as I generally prefer feeling considerably closer to the tarmac and a little less surrounded by metal. However, I was asked to test drive a new Jeep Cherokee and found myself enjoying the experience to a great deal. The model I tested was the new Jeep Cherokee Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Limited; complete with a considerably powerful diesel engine.

The first impressions were more of confusion than of a clear positive or negative persuasion. If you have spent your entire driving career in hatchbacks, saloons and the occasional roadster, the feeling of stepping up into a high driving positioned vehicle is strange and rather disconcerting. Although only a matter of inches higher than a regular car, driving the Jeep Cherokee gave me a palpable sense of vertigo. After half an hour or so of coursing round country lanes and a couple of dual carriageways this increasingly weird feeling gave way to a sense of road-mastery. The sheer size of the Jeep Cherokee does give you a genuine sense of owning the road, which in less mature hands could lead to mischief, but all it gave me was a palpable sense of control.

I would highly recommend at least test driving a Jeep Cherokee, firstly to see whether 4X4 driving is suitable for you and secondly to briefly enjoy feeling like king of the road.

The 4X4 market has become inevitably subject to saturation with every manufacturer releasing their take on the international favourite of the Sports Utility Vehicle. With so many choices to make it is often difficult to know exactly where to start in your myriad of choices. If you’re anything like me then you will want to start at the beginning, with the first manufacturer to release a Sports Utility Vehicle; the legendary Jeep.

Jeep have been favourites in the 4X4 market for decades on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, with the European market gaining momentum all the time. I test drove the Jeep Cherokee, one of the most popular of the Jeep models available and compared it to the vast canon of experience I have driving 4X4s.

The first impressions are exceedingly good; the Jeep Cherokee ticks every box you would expect a vehicle of its ilk to tick. It’s big, it looks sporty and it has the interior space to comfortably house a small army. However, in my years of driving, I have learnt that it is a huge mistake to judge a car on its looks. The proof of the Jeep Cherokee’s worth would certainly be found in the driving.

I sat in the elevated driving position of the Jeep Cherokee and surveyed the road before me. Being this high up takes some getting used to, but ultimately provides a sense of ‘owning the road’, which is a marvellous feeling to have when driving a vehicle that ostensibly is the size of a juggernaut. This vast cocoon feels vastly safe, but also surprisingly sprightly and nimble around the tight country corners.

All things considered, the Jeep Cherokee is a great performer that more than makes up for the vast number of similar vehicles on the road by standing out of the crowd with superior looks and performance.
