Chris Kristofferson from Iowa is a bonafide diesel truck fanatic. He drives a 2008 GMC 2500HD SLT X-Cab EFI. Kristofferson is concerned whether to maintain or remove the DPF Delete Kit which he had installed on his $47,000 truck.

In his post, he said that that some truck enthusiasts have been throwing their DPF in the trash in favor of the PPE programmer and turbo back exhaust. He said he misses the excitement of passing almost any vehicle on the highway. I believe messing with a $47,000 truck can really cause some problem especially to those who do not know what they are doing?”

According to Kristofferson, his other option is to buy a six gun and PDA with an MBRP DPF back exhaust but he is aware that the power will not even be close to the same.

“The good thing about that though is I’ll be able to adjust on the fly,” he said.

Alex Santander of North Carolina, who drives a 2007 Chevy replied that ditching the DPF Delete Kit was the best move he had ever done.

“An expensive truck really deserves to be taken cared off …. it took me around two months to keep things going,” Santander said.

Another reader said he was more comfortable using Banks + PDA. “I believe a dyno session is appropriate. I will give you the details when they are available. I’m in colorado so the numbers will likely be lower than elsewhere — but the % gain should be relevant. If I were you, I’d just wait a couple of months.”

According to the post, he would most likely dump his DPF Delete Kit at the five-year mark when the warranty’s up.

According to him, he cannot distinguish the difference because both provide power.

He offered four reasons why he believes otherwise;
1) Automatically reads EGTs and backs off power as appropriate (This feature for some reason is overlooked. Does PPE/EFI live have it?)
2) Easily detachable and no ECU residue
3) Anticipate some improvement on MPGs.
4) No gauges to install, just look at the PDA.

Buy the newest and best and the upkeep issues might be far larger than you dream. Take batteries. How much will a battery replacement cost for a hybrid down the road? What’s the environmental cost of battery recycling and replacement? These are lurking money time bombs which will make many more modern autos unaffordable for poor people.

4. Parts are everywhere.

Used parts and the people to install them are the way to keep old wagons working. Many vehicles hit the scrap heap not because they are worn out or obsolete. It’s simply because parts are highly priced and the talents to handle that model are not common. Drive old Chevy, Ford and Dodge lorries and forget all that, at least for the moment.

5. Tools not toys.

Trucks are tools like trowels and hammers. They can be art objects too. But older trucks keep going because they make sense. Does the newest vehicles stand the test of time? Perhaps, but perhaps not.

Cheap lorries represent a lot of energy and work that has already been spent. Scrap a truck and you’ve made unavailable huge amounts of energy invested in planning and putting that machine together. Keeping wagons working is way more environmentally provident that ditching them and replacing with new.

What about comparing an old Chevy pickup with newest hybrid pickup trucks SUV. No comparison again. Look at what you can move with old wagons and look at what your tiny hybrid will do. The old van is a different beast that excels at what it does.
