Used car dealers are not known for their fair trading, They have a tainted image at best. Fair assumption or not, nobody wants to be turned over. What these dealers get up to would blow you away. Here are two favorite scams the dealers love to play.

BAIT AND SWITCH - As old as the hills but still going strong.

  • A dealer is advertising one of your favorite cars at a really low rate in the paper. You have never seen this car advertised at such a low figure before. Even though you are slightly sceptical, you decide to pop down th see for yourself. What a surprise, the car has already been sold. “Why not have a look at some others models while you’re here?”, says the dealer. You are interested though a little worried so you decide to listen to their spiel. If you ask for some figures the dealer will probably say that the finance manager wiil sort that out.

It is all about getting you through the door. Once you are there the dealers reckon they can control the process.

LESSON

  • Do your research on the manufacturers websites and get to know about all the different options available on the model you are interested in.
  • Having a friend with you can help if the dealer tries to put pressure on you.
  • Check any documents thoroughly before you sign them and as ever, if in doubt, don’t sign.

POOR CREDIT RATING

  • The Finance Manager comes out and tells you that your credit rating is lower than it really is. Because of this the interest rate will be higher so that the loan will be accepted. Making money doesn’t get easier than that!

LESSON

  • Check your credit rating prior to visiting the dealership. Take some proof to show them if they try it on. The figure you are given regarding your credit rating is the same regardless of the identity of the searcher. To find out your credit rating visit Experian or Equifax, both of whom can give you a credit report. If they start getting bullish leave and do not return.

You’ll probably find this info. surprising. Let me tell you, there is plenty more that they get up to. These guys have turned selling into an art form.

These dealers are slick operators. Get the full inside story from an ex-salesman who was sick of the hustle. Get all the information you need on all the stunts they try to get you buying the car. Don’t let them walk all over you.

When buying a used car in California you need to make sure you understand your legal rights should anything go wrong. As long as your used car was sold to you with a express, written warranty you are covered by the California Lemon Law. This is basically the seller or manufacturer’s written promise to repair or replace defective parts for a stated period of time.

In theory if you buy a used car in California you are legally entitled to have the defects repaired or a replacement given as long as you have the aforesaid warranty. However you could still be charged for use prior to the defect arising. This charge is not easy to calculate as there is no set formula as there is with new vehicles.

The list below should help you avoid buying a lemon and if you do get stitched up you will have the relevant paper work to support your claim.

  • Don’t buy a lemon! Check the history of the car!
  • Confirm that the car’s warranty is valid.
  • Check the warranty that is being offered with your used car carefully as warranties are not standard.
  • Always have the car checked by an independent professional. If anything goes wrong you will be glad you did.
  • Take the vehicle for a drive to check out how it runs and don’t be afraid to point out anything to the dealer that you don’tlike.
  • DO NOT BUY  if you have any doubts regarding the vehicle or the way in which the dealer is presenting the car.

It is advisable to speak to a lawyer if any issues cannot be resolved to your satisfaction.
